KIPRIS is a patent search service for Korean documents provided by KIPO, the Korean Patent Office. The service can be accessed from http://eng.kipris.or.kr/eng/main/main_eng.jsp.

Background

Since April 2007, Korean patent documents have been part of PCT minimum documentation requirements. Therefore thorough searching of this collection is essential for international patent filings.

Espacenet provides access to a collection of English-language abstracts for Korean documents, known as the Korean Patent Abstracts (KPA) collection. However, in the Fall 2009 issue of Patent Information News, the EPO reported that there were no English abstracts available for Korean documents from 2005 onward, although efforts were being made to expand this coverage. In addition, it was also reported that coverage of published applications (A documents) and utility models (U documents) was limited for documents published before 2000. As a method of enhancing Korean patent document searching, the EPO recommended a supplemental search in KIPRIS.[1]

Data Coverage and Interface

Data coverage for the KIPRIS search service can be found at http://eng.kipris.or.kr/eng/search_guide/data_coverage.jsp.

Both General and Advanced search interfaces are available for the service. On the search results screen, links are provided to the English hand-translated abstract (from the Korea Patent Abstracts database, or KPA) when available, the full document image with text in original Korean, or a machine translation of the Korean full text into English as provided by the K2E-PAT service (a fee-based service).

Machine Translation Service

KIPRIS provides access to bibliographic data and Korean full text. A fee-based servuce called K2E-PAT, is available for users who wish to search the Korean full text using English keywords. The search interface at K2E-PAT is available from http://k2epat.kipris.or.kr/k2epat/searchLogina.do?next=GeneralSearch. Performing a search through the interface is free; however, attempting to open the machine translated text of individual search results will bring up a payment screen.

In addition, as a service to their users, the EPO can provide English machine translations of Korean full text patent documents via the K2E-PAT service, for a fee. More information is available at http://www.epo.org/patents/patent-information/east-asian/translation/K2E-PAT.html.
