PAIR (Patent Application Information Retrieval system) is a source for US patent application status checks. There are two sides to PAIR: public and private. Most patent searchers will only ever use the public database, which allows any user to check the status of an application (and sometimes view the entire file history for that application) with only a publication or application number. PAIR is the most timely source of US patent status information.
Online images of patent file wrappers are also available via PAIR for some applications. These are called Image File Wrappers, and they contain “an electronic version of a patent application, including image and/or text versions of the bibliographic information, all papers as filed, and all office actions and correspondence related to that application.”
PAIR can be accessed at the PAIR portal.
