Introduction

PatentStorm is a database of "full-text U.S. patents and patent applications from the U.S. Patent Office," and the "database contains issued patents (including utility, design and plant patents) back to 1976, and yet-to-be approved patent applications back to 2005."[1] Users can search the site as unregistered users, or they can register for free in order to access features like PDF download of patent documents.[2] Users can purchase "PatentPlus searchable PDFs" or "AccuPatent" enhanced PDFs through PatentStorm.[3]

Use

Users can browse the documents on the site by:

  • Inventor (alphabetical list or search by name)
  • Examiner (alphabetical list or search by name)
  • Date (chronological list of years and calenders of months and days)

Users can enter queries through the simple search form, available at the top of each page, or users can select the advanced search form. The advanced form allows users to search in predesignated fields, including Patent or application number, Inventor, Title, Issue date, Filed date, Full text, Assignee name, Attorney or firm name, Examiner, U.S. class, and international class. Users can sort the results by issue date or relevance.

From the list of search results, users can select the full record and view four separate sections, listed in four links at the top of the record view: Abstract, Claims, Description, and Full Text. "Patent References" are listed at the top of each section, and links are provided to cited US patents also in the PatentStorm database. Patent number, issue date, and expiration date are also listed at the top of each section, below the title. "Other References" and "Field of Search" (US Patent Classification code descriptions) are listed at the bottom of each section. Searchable or enhanced PDFs of patent documents are available for purchase only. It should be noted that many Google ads are featured on all sections of this site.
