Patents.com is a patent-related community on the web, offering features such as patent searches, resources for filing a patent (fee-based), directories of patent attorneys, inventors, and assignees, and general information on the patent field. Users can register for free to create a profile of recent PDF downloads and search requests, and registered users can also choose to receive weekly email alerts about patents related to a set of keywords. Patents.com currently only seems to search US published patent applications and issued US patents.
The patent search function allows users to search for patents and patent applications in the following fields:
- Patent number
Users can search in multiple predesignated fields at one time, although it is not stated what the default Boolean operator used between the fields is. Search results appear listed below the search fields. An exact number of total search results isn't displayed, but search results are listed by about fifty results to a page, with the page numbers displayed at the very bottom of the screen.
When users select a search result, they are taken to a full listing of the record, including bibliographic information, abstract, references, citation, claims, and descriptions. Users can download a full PDF version of the patent document for free through a link at the bottom of the page. It should be noted that Google ads are featured on many sections of this site, including the full record view.
