January 2013
The full DWPI Coverage Summary chart (PDF) has been updated as of January 2013. About half of the individual country coverage charts (alphabetically up to Luxembourg) on the Country Coverage and Kind Codes homepage also appear to have been updated as of January 2013.
Thomson Reuters has posted a Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) – FAQ sheet (PDF) which includes the following information about the main features of the CPC implementation in Thomson Reuter’s products:[1]
The CPC Backfile, which includes the pre -1920 US data (to the extent it has been supplied by the EPO and USPTO), will be loaded in 2013 Q1 for most of the products. In addition to the CPC new symbols the Backfile will also include the most up to date version of the IPC and ECLA (to the end of 2012). DWPI Backfile will be updated to include the second version of the Backfile supplied by the EPO at the end of January 2013 to include the CPC position indicator, a late addition to the CPC data. Therefore the DWPI Backfile with the position indicator will be available at the end of April 2013.
The ongoing CPC data from 2013 will be accessible in Thomson Reuters products in separate fields corresponding to its status: original for data issued at the time of publication (usually data extracted from the direct weekly data feed from the patent office and the CPC allocated by the national patent offices, CPCNO) and current for the most up to date version of the CPC for that record (usually data extracted from main exchange bibliographic file from the EPO or US reclassification feed).
According to the January 2013 issue of the Dialog Chronolog:[2]
- Latest Manual Code revision goes live on Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) - The Derwent World Patents Index® (DWPI) manual coding system annual revision for 2013 is now complete and is being used by the editorial teams to code records appearing in the database from DWPI Update 201301 onward. The editorial team consistently applies DWPI manual codes to new inventions across all 47 authorities (soon to be increasing) covered in the database. [...] In total, 235 changes have been made to the manual coding system and scope notes. Among them are 101 new codes.
- DWPI Country Update — Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia - Derwent World Patents Index® (DWPI) has provided the following country enhancements:
Additional Malaysia backfile
DWPI began coverage of Malaysian granted patents (MY-A documents) at the end of 2010 starting with documents published in January 2010. The data now goes back to the beginning of 2005, and this data has now started appearing in DWPI as of update 201277. It will take several weeks before the backfile data is complete.
Enhanced coverage of Thailand
Coverage of Thailand is being enhanced to include registration numbers. These numbers are a five-digit serial number and will be indicated with the patent kind code TH-R0. They will begin to appear in DWPI in early 2013.
As part of this enhancement, the date that is currently used for TH applications in DWPI will be the actual application date rather than the date of publication of the registration number as at present. The application dates can be over 10 years old and these are now starting to appear in DWPI.
New coverage of Indonesia — the 50th data source in DWPI
In early 2013, coverage of Indonesian applications (national and PCT transfers) and Simple Patents from 2010 to date will begin. This marks the 50th data source in DWPI (48 patenting authorities, Research Disclosures and International Technology Disclosures). Coverage will include DWPI titles and/or abstracts with CPI/EPI manual coding and chemical indexing for new basics.
- Start using the new Cooperative Patent Classification on Dialog - The CPC classes will begin appearing in INPADOC (File 345) and Chinese Patents Fulltext (File 325) in January 2013, but will be delayed in DWPI (Files 350, 351 and 352) until mid-March 2013. The search prefix for CPC codes is CP=. The accompanying attributes are searchable using CA= and can be linked to a particular CPC code using the (S) operator, e.g, S CP= A01F-0015/0833(S)CA=I.
According to an announcement on the DWPI users LinkedIn group:[3]
As a result of the USPTO’s decision to delay the publication of the first patent applications with CPC classes on until March 17th 2013 there will now be a delay in the appearance of the first CPC information within the DWPI database. This will now not appear until the first quarterly update of INPADOC data which is expected in early March. The first US data will appear towards the end of March assuming this publication schedule is followed.
Thomson Reuters is now offering live online training entitled "CPC - The New Patent Classification System and Its Effects on Thomson Innovation and DWPI." Users can view the schedule of available courses and register here.

According to the December 2012 issue of the Dialog Chronolog:[6]
- Latest Manual Code Revision goes live on Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) - The DWPI manual coding system annual revision has now been completed and is being used by the editorial teams to code records appearing in the database from DWPI Update 201301 onward. The editorial team consistently applies DWPI manual codes to new inventions across all 47 authorities (soon to be increasing) covered in the database. Since the coding highlights the novel technical aspects of the invention as well as the application(s), it is extremely useful to improve the precision and recall of searches and the subsequent analysis of result sets. [...] In total, 235 changes have been made to the manual coding system and scope notes. Among them are 101 new codes.
- DWPI country coverage update — Changes to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Kind Codes - As a result of customer feedback, the kind code for Gulf Cooperation Council patents in Derwent World Patents Index® (DWPI) has been changed from B to A to reflect that this is the first stage of publication for records filed through this patent office. From update 201260 onward, all new GCC patents have the kind code A, with back-file corrections subsequently appearing to change the kind code of records already in DWPI. DWPI users are encouraged to review any current Alerts or search strategies to ensure the correct patent kind is being searched.
November 2012
According to an announcement about the Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) in the Thomson Innovation helpfiles:[7]
CPC will be made available in most Thomson Reuters patent products and services and will be represented by new fields containing both backfile and frontfile CPC data. The old ECLA and USPC fields, while no longer updated, will be retained in Thomson Reuters products to allow reference to historical data.
Thomson Innovation will fully embrace this latest classification advancement with flexible and versatile features to allow searching, display, analysis, export, and alerting using CPC with their main defining characteristics (attributes). “Current CPC” fields will capture the latest status of the CPC for records and “Original CPC” fields will capture the classification information available at the time of publication.
DWPI users will also see and benefit from these classification changes including the refinements of the CPC data in the backfile as well as in the ongoing patent data. Technical documentation and data samples detailing the specific implementation in the DWPI feeds have already been sent to those users (and can also be obtained from our Technical Support team).
The CPC frontfile classification data will be available in January 2013 and the backfile data will be loaded in the first quarter of 2013.
Browsing tools and help files, as well as our training and product specialists, will provide assistance during the transition period so our customers can take full advantage of the benefits of this new classification system.

March 2012
This update has occurred since our last review. During our next scheduled update, this article will be revised to include a description of the newly added content and features.
According to a publication on the STN International website:[10]US application numbers consist of a two-digit series designation, corresponding to a range of filing years (i.e. series 08/ was used for filing years 1993 through 1997), plus a six-digit serial number (for example 635776).
In DWPI and DPCI, the format for US application numbers, for series up to and including series 12, excludes the two-digit series designation and comprises the application date along with the six-digit application serial, which starts again from000001 with each new series.
Series 13 Documents
The USPTO has now started publishing application numbers for series 13 with the first application in this series being filed on 17 December 2010. As an improvement to DWPI and DPCI, the series code element will now be included in the application numbers from series 13 onwards. There will be no change to the formats for any of the previous series.
See this publication on the STN International website for an example.
According to a publication on the STN International website:[11]Since the DWPI reload in 2006 on STN individual publication information has been covered. Customers requested that a display format be provided selectively displaying the individual publication data having given rise to the retrieval. In January of 2009, the Derwent WPI files were enhanced to include Japanese classification codes, including both File Index (or F-Index) and F-Term codes. According to the announcement, "more than 5.25 million Japanese patents in about 4.5 million DWPI documents [were] enhanced with current Japanese classification data for 1966-2008."[17] This data will be included for new records in the database from February 2009 forward.
October 2008
In October of 2008, the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) announced that PCT Applications entering the national phase from the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) are now available in DWPI on the STN search platform from July 24, 2008 to the present. Coverage is based on the "Canadian Patent Applications" disks published by CIPO, starting with Volume 2008/001.[18]
For more information about the document kind codes available for each patent authority collection in DWPI, see "Publication Kind Codes in STN Patent Databases," a manual produced by STN for the comparison of three STN databases: INPADOCDB (an STN version of the INPADOC database produced by the EPO), Derwent World Patents Index (called WPINDEX on STN), and CAplus (a proprietary chemical patent and literature database produced by CAS). The PDF version of the document is available at http://www.stn-international.de/training_center/patents/pkcodes.pdf.
September 2008
In September of 2008, the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) announced that DWPI on the STN search service now includes utility model registration documents from the Chinese patent office (SIPO), beginning with documents published on October 3, 2007. [19]
In addition, CAS announced that DWPI on STN would also include utility models from the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) beginning with documents published in January 2008. The news release stated that these Korean utility model records would include full DWPI value-added indexing, including DWPI titles, abstracts, manual coding, and deep indexing for records with significant chemistry content.[19]
February 2008
In February of 2008, US national classification codes and ECLA classification codes (including in-computer-only or ICO codes) were retroactively added to DWPI.[20]
The 2006 Reload
In 2006, major changes were made to the structure of the Derwent World Patents Index, and lots of new backfile data was added to extend the database coverage. Most notably, the reload marked the beginning of the new division of Derwent records into Invention (family) and Member (publication) data levels. This new structure was implemented to accommodate more data about individual family member documents. New "member level" data, added during the reload, included original titles, full inventor name and address, original assignee name and address, patent agent information, and US patent main claims. This data was added retrospectively, in some cases back to the earliest records in the database.
Before the 2006 reload, Derwent did not contain US, ECLA, or Japanese F-term classification data. After the reload, the system adapted to accommodate classifications that would be regularly revised and updated. Derwent began by adding original US classifications at time of publication in 2006, with the aim to add subsequent re-classifications of US, ECLA and F-term codes.
In addition, the reload added new application and priority numbers for patent family members (previous to the reload, this data was limited to only 10 priorities, and applications were captured from a limited number of document kinds and authorities). This extension of priority and application data makes date searching in the database more reliable.
The reload also saw the DCR structure searching capabilities, discussed below, extend throughout the database backfile. Before the re-load, the capability only extended back to the service’s introduction in 1999.
Finally, one improvement to database functionality was implemented with the reload: "stop words" restrictions were removed from the database, and common words became searchable. This improvement enables phrase searching where phrases contain common words – e.g. the phrase "Vitamin A" is now searchable in the database.
