Ring Index Numbers (RINs)

Ring Index Numbers (or RINs) are special chemical fragmentation codes that are used to index specific ring systems not uniquely described by other fragmentation codes. These codes have been in use since 1972, and their definitions are produced and published separately from the other fragmentation codes.

Thomson used the "Patterson Ring Index" as the basis for its RIN codes, but for many years Thomson indexers continued to create and assign RINs to ring structures that were not included in the index. This practice stopped in January 1999, and no new RIN codes are being created. However, all existing RIN codes are still in use to index new DWPI records.

RIN numbers are designed to be used with chemical fragmentation codes, but users should note that they will not retrieve documents indexed before 1972.
