Legal Status Information
DialogPRO provides patent legal status information through the Derwent Patent Abstracts file, the Global Patents file, and the Inpadoc Family and Legal Status file. Legal status information is derived from Derwent World Patents Index. The Global Patents file has multiple sources: the EPO for European patents (which draws its legal status from the European Patent Registry[1], the Institut National de la Propriété Industrielle (INPI) for French patents, and IFI Claims alongside the USPTO for US patents.
Due to the structure of the French Patents database, the legal status information available through INPI is presented in a table formatted specifically for the data fields unique to French patents. French and English versions are available.[2]
The Dialog bluesheet for their U.S. Patents Fulltext file states the following with regard to included legal status information: “Additional post-issuance legal status information is supplied by IFI/Plenum Data Corporation for patents that have been reassigned, reexamined, granted an extension beyond the normal 17/20-year period, expired prior to the normal 17/20-year period, or reinstated after late payment of the maintenance fee.”[3]
