EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) is making it easier for library staff to search for ebooks and audiobooks and add them to their collections with the new EBSCOhost Collection Manager (ECM). ECM can be used to search or browse for ebooks and audiobooks by title, author, publisher, and more or make selections from the Subject Sets or Featured Collections created by EBSCO. ECM can also help libraries create and manage lists of titles they want to expose to patron-driven acquisition (PDA), manage deposits, and determine which ownership models to apply to the various ebooks and audiobooks in their collections.
ECM allows staff to be designated as selectors or approvers and then build lists and modify requests based on their budgets. It can be used to determine which titles to purchase outright through the available access models and to select which titles to expose to end users through PDA.
ECM users can establish lists based on subjects and allow the collection development staff (selectors) to specify which titles are needed while the approvers maintain the right to make purchasing decisions. Since ECM is also used to set up and maintain a library’s PDA program and manage the deposits, librarians can use it to add additional content to the library catalog.

With the merger of EBSCO and H.W. Wilson, we have deepened the abstracting and indexing of H.W. Wilson products now offered by EBSCO Publishing, and to which you have subscribed. These enhancements necessitate an adjustment to the direct URLs that link users to certain products from, for example, your library home page, in that the database shortnames/abbreviations (the last three letters in each URL) are different.
Below is a sample of how one direct database URL looked before the updates:
http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?authtype=ip,uid&defaultdb=axh
And here is how it looks with its updated database shortname:
http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?authtype=ip,uid&defaultdb=asa
Note that the only difference is in the last three letters of the URL. You will need to update the URLs by replacing the existing database shortname at the end of each URL with its new shortname. Note: Direct URLs that remain unchanged will result in broken links.
The status of each product is listed here, so that you know when your URLs can be updated, including those that are already released and can be updated immediately.

As such, when any Wilson database to which you subscribe becomes available on EBSCOhost, you (or the appropriate individual at your institution) will receive an automated email message letting you know which products are now accessible on EBSCOhost. Furthermore, because there were 16 Wilson databases already available on EBSCOhost that will also be enhanced as part of this transition, customers will also be notified when the new versions of these databases are live on EBSCOhost. Additionally, please note there are some databases that will no longer be made available, and as such, customers will receive automatic upgrades to the more comprehensive versions, as they become available. For example, customers subscribing to Book Review Digest will automatically receive Book Review Digest Plus, and customers of Education Index will be upgraded to Education Abstracts. We wanted to give you advance notice so that we can work together to make this a seamless transition. EBSCO has been working diligently to bring all Wilson databases onto the EBSCOhost platform. Much work continues to go into readying EBSCOhost for the unique features of the Wilson databases. We anticipate that customers will experience “the best of both worlds” as these databases become available on EBSCOhost, with all of the intricate handling expected of the Wilson databases. As each applicable Wilson database becomes available on EBSCOhost, we will notify customers. Any Wilson database that was already available on EBSCOhost prior to the merger will also experience enhancements that will be announced as they become available.

If you have purchased a Wilson database, it is likely that it has some sort of restriction on the number of simultaneous users that may access the product. EBSCO will offer individual institutions affordable upgrade options to move to unlimited access. In addition, if your library has purchased a Wilson Retro Index, EBSCO will be lifting the simultaneous user restriction and offering a free upgrade to unlimited access (to all individual institutions effective September 2011). This upgrade is not applicable to multi-site/shared subscriptions.
According to the EBSCO website:[74]
By being able to combine the strengths of the two companies [EBSCO and Wilson], seven subject areas will dramatically improve for online research: art, education, humanities, applied sciences, law, library science, and biography. This means that new upgrade opportunities will exist as follows (please click on the following link): www.ebscohost.com/superdatabases. We have been licensing many full-text journals that have never before been available via full-text databases, and we have been “banking” that content for these new products. Those newly available unique journals will be combined with all of the existing Wilson & EBSCO content to create these seven “super” databases. These new “source” products will cost more, but they will offer a single, comprehensive source for all EBSCO and Wilson content in each subject area. We expect these seven new super databases to become available in early 2012. While EBSCO will be offering these seven new “super databases” combining all content from EBSCO and Wilson in these subject areas, it is important to note that the new, merged “super databases” will cost an additional amount, but customers will not be required to upgrade.

According to the EBSCO website:
Effective with a recent software release, EBSCOhost now treats a short list of command line search tags/field codes (when entered in lower or mixed case) as text. (Saved Searches and Alerts will not be affected by this change at this time.) Only UPPER CASE instances of these tags will be treated as search tags. The tags that will undergo this change are: AN, AS, AU, BE, DE, DO, DR, GI, IN, IP, IS, LA, RN, SO. Researchers using keyword search will not be affected by this change. The EBSCOhost search engine will place quotation marks around the tags listed above, whenever they are entered in lower or mixed case. Therefore, a user will see the quotes in search history and saved searches going forward. For example: if the user enters an american tragedy, they will see "an" american tragedy in their search history. Please note: While users must only enter these specific tags in UPPER CASE with this software release (so that they will be treated as tags and not text), we highly recommend that all users become accustomed to entering ALL command line search tags in UPPER CASE to accommodate future additions to the short list of affected tags. The current list of tags that will be changed is made up of tags that are not frequently used, to cause the least amount of impact on "super" users who are the most likely to employ command line searching.[82]

October 2009
This update has occurred since our last review. During our next scheduled update, this article will be revised to include a description of the newly added content and features.
EBSCOhost Mobile was released, which works on all smartphones and other mobile devices. "EBSCO designed it with a lower resolution, simplified by removing folders and other advanced features, and changed the more performance intensive technologies, e.g., Ajax and Javascript, into lightweight HTML."[85]
July 2009
This update has occurred since our last review. During our next scheduled update, this article will be revised to include a description of the newly added content and features.
In this update, EBSCOhost has improved its display of Inspec records. Scientific formulas will now have proper subtext and supertext support, and those formulas can now be searched without using idiosyncratic descriptive language.
An official summary of the new feature, including screenshots, may be found at http://support.epnet.com/support_news/detail.php?id=543.
Future Updates
According to the EBSCOhost website[86], four major additions are planned for the unspecified future:
- EBSCOhost Integrated Search will allow users to search all available electronic resources, including “…other database aggregators, OPACs, publisher packages, A-to-Z services, and virtually any other electronic resource available.”
- Additional improvements to medical searching are planned, such as “improved search history, search syntax, and subject searching…”
- A notetaking feature that will store user-generated text notes about a document in the user’s folder, including “links back to the original context.”
- EBSCOhost Mobile, “…a true wireless access interface for mobile device users accessing EBSCOhost databases.”
- EBSCOhost Integrated Search will allow users to search all available electronic resources, including “…other database aggregators, OPACs, publisher packages, A-to-Z services, and virtually any other electronic resource available.”
