Viewing Individual Records
The majority of EBSCOhost’s result view is devoted to displaying bibliographic information about the document and an abstract, where available. Among the bibliographic categories is “Subject Terms,” a list of related topic areas provided by EBSCOhost, and, where available, “Author-Supplied Keywords,” a similar list sourced from the document itself. An accession number is also provided. Specific to EBSCOhost, the accession number of a document is issued sequentially as it is added to their collection, and can then be searched via the “AN” field. Any hyperlinked keywords, classification terms or related subjects will cause the system to run a new search on the selected term when clicked.
Results will also include file-specific content, if present. For example, records from the INSPEC file will include INSPEC controlled vocabulary indexing and classification codes. A lookup feature for any classification codes or other special indexing features is available from the header bar at the top of the page.
Above the bibliographic data is a series of icons that provide quick access to additional interface functions as shown below.
From left to right, the icons are:
- View PDF, HTML or "Linked Full Text" (access via the user's subscription 3rd party provider; must be enabled by EBSCO staff), if available.
- Print the bibliographic citation.
- Email the citation data.
- ”Save as file,” i.e., export citation in AMA, APA, Chicago/Turabian, MLA, or Vancouver format. HTML or text only.
- ”Citation Format” pops up an additional window with the citation formatted in all of the above styles.
- ”Export to Bibliographic Manager,” which allows export of citation data to various file formats for the following third-party citation management options:
- EndNote
- ProCite
- Reference Manager
- EndNote Web
- Generic bibliographic management software
- BibTeX
- MARC21
- RefWorks
- ”Add to folder” or, if clicked when the document is already in the folder, “Remove from folder.”
A slim pane on the right holds the “Find Similar Results” link. When clicked, EBSCOhost will construct a new search string including all related subject categories as determined by their indexers, and specifically excluding the original document by accession number. Beneath that is displayed the current contents of the user’s folder with a small orange “x” icon next to each entry for easy removal. For further information about user folders and storing records, please see the Saving Results section. As with the result list view, the right pane can be hidden from view, but unlike the result list, the center pane will then expand to use the additional space.
If it is available in HTML format, the full text will load below the individual record view; however, PDF and Linked full text versions are not visible without clicking the appropriate icon. No keyword highlighting features are available, but the searched keyword is italicized in the bibliographic record.
