Export Functions

In October 2008, esp@cenet was updated to include an export feature. This feature will allow users to export single pages of search results (up to 30 documents), into CSV format (this type of export is typically viewed as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet).

The export feature is accessed via the esp@cenet hit list (the system also calls this page the "result list"). After a search is conducted, an "Export" option is displayed at the top of the result list page, next to "Print." The figure below shows the location of the export feature.

The Export function is accessed from the results list page.

Selecting the link will download the file, which is generally viewed with Microsoft Excel. There is no way to selectively download only certain data. Each of the following bibliographic data fields will be contained in the export file:

  • Publication number
  • Publication date
  • Inventor(s)
  • Applicant(s)
  • International classification
  • European classification
  • Application number
  • Date of application
  • Priority number(s)
  • Cited documents

The export spreadsheet will contain one row for each esp@cenet family. Only data for the representative family member is shown; there is no field containing the other esp@cenet family members. Also note that record sections such as "abstract" and "representative image" are not exportable. The figure below shows a sample export spreadsheet.

editors note iconEditor's Note:

It was once speculated that the lack of exporting features was one way esp@cenet avoided competition with commercial providers of patent data (a major concern back when the free esp@cenet service was introduced). Now that the feature has been added (as of October 2008), it is clear that there is still not enough power behind it to put commercial providers out of business. Because users can only export up to 30 records at a time, and because the fields available for export are limited, the editors feel this level of export power is probably insufficient to support most complex analysis projects.
