Weighting and Ranking Features

The ranking system employed by FreePatentsOnline is proprietary and shows each result ranked “on a curve” with the top result always scoring 1000. The resulting score seems to be based mostly on frequency of key word hits.

The user has the option of using ranking related operators to modify the importance of each term in the search query, and thus impact the relevance score. Users can then choose to sort results by relevancy when inputting a search in the Expert Search or Quick Search tabs. For more information on the relevance operator, see the Operators section.
