According to STN International:[1]
To ensure an improved, more consistent user experience with newer features and maximized security for all STN sessions, we plan to discontinue support and access to older versions of STN Express below v8.4 during 2013. Support and software are now discontinued for all versions below 8.0. Please note that you can upgrade for free at any time to the current version of STN Express, Version 8.5, from the STN Software License and Download website.Software and support for versions of STN Express will be discontinued according to the following schedule:

According to STN International:[2]
On January 12, 2013, STN added CPC search and display capabilities and a CPC thesaurus to the CA/CAplus family of databases and the USPATFULL/USPAT2 databases. CPC capabilities are already available in the INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB databases on STN.
Plans for additional CPC implementation include the Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI), a number of full text patent databases and USPATOLD.
ECLA, ICO and USPC searching capabilities remain available in relevant STN databases.

The STN partners, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) and FIZ Karlsruhe, are pleased to announce that Version One of the new STN platform is now available in beta for fixed fee customers. This is the first major milestone in a multi-year initiative to create the next generation of STN, the choice of patent experts.
The focus of this first version has been on developing the core search and retrieval system for new STN. This release combines the complete CAS REGISTRY and Chemical Abstracts content along with Thomson Reuters’ Derwent World Patents Index®.[...]
A new approach for STN is to allow organization of work in projects for easy management of search queries and results. New technologies are designed to process broad and complex searches with industry-leading performance. This is vital for patent searchers to keep pace with the continued increase of disclosed research and patent information from around the world.
The new workflow integrates the power of command line with an intuitive user interaction that enables professionals to leverage their expertise and realize instantaneous results. For the first time, text and structures can be combined in a single query to simplify searching for chemical information.
The STN Partners will incorporate additional content and functionality in the new architecture with ongoing versions. Full text patent content will be added throughout 2013. [...] The current STN system, including STN Express® and the other STN products will continue to be available and fully supported throughout the development of the new platform.

- CAS Registers 70 Millionth Substance Just 18 Months after Reaching 60 Millionth Milestone - Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), the world's authority for chemical information, announced a major milestone for the CAS REGISTRY, the largest collection of publicly disclosed chemical substance information. CAS scientists registered the 70 millionth substance from a patent application submitted to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO).
- Training & Event Calendar on the CAS Website - You can now find upcoming training on the new Training & Events Calendar. The event titles provide a full description of the event and registration links. For simplified use, view the calendar by month or filter by event type.
November 2012
The following update was listed in the November Issue of STNews:[5]
MARPAT® Backfile Expansion Update - In March 2012, CAS announced that the MARPAT database would be enhanced with English-, German- and Japanese-language patents from 1987. The addition of English- and German-language patents for 1987 is now complete. Processing of English- and German-language patents from 1985 and 1986 and Japanese-language patents from 1987 is continuing. We are pleased to report that Markush information from over 2,600 patent publications has been added to date.
September 2012
According to the STN International website, "by the end of 2012, CAS expects to register the 70 millionth organic or inorganic substance."[6]
August 2012
The following updates were described in the August 2012 issue of STNews for the STN platform:[7]
- Redesigned CAS Website Launched on August 5, 2012 - CAS is pleased to announce that a newly redesigned CAS website was launched on Sunday, August 5. Combining a modern design with streamlined navigation and searching, the refreshed site will provide easier access to products, news, videos, social media and other valuable STN content.Links to many pages on the current site will automatically redirect you to corresponding information on the refreshed site. If a page is not automatically redirected a custom error message will suggest options such as using the site search or site map.
- Access to STN from Versions of STN Express® Below 8.0 Will Be Discontinued on August 31, 2012.
July 2012
The following update was described in the July 2012 issue of STNews for the STN platform:[8]
- RSS Delivery of Alerts (SDIs) Enhanced with Hit Term Highlighting - Hit term highlighting is now available for all new and existing RSS alerts. When creating a new SDI, add this option by typing Y (for Yes) when prompted for highlighting. To remove or add highlighting to an existing SDI, use SDI EDIT followed by the name of the SDI. Select the number for the highlighting parameter and type N (for NO) or Y when prompted for highlighting.
The CAS REGISTRY now contains more experimental property data with the addition of more than 120,000 Wiley mass spectra and NMR spectra.[9]
June 2012

A new weekly SDI package on STN increases the timeliness of your current awareness and makes it easier to meet government reporting requirements for pharmacovigilance.
An SDI package combines multiple SDI result sets from different databases into a single, convenient delivery, regardless of individual database update schedules and SDI frequencies.
SDI packages save you time and increase your productivity with:
- Automatic removal of duplicate records.
- Convenient single delivery of packaged SDI results monthly or weekly.

According to STN International:[11]
A new version of STN Express, Version 8.5.1, is now available. This maintenance release provides software updates and completes the integration of new full-text databases AUPATFULL, CANPATFULL and CNFULL on STN.Please visit the STN Software License and Download website to download STN Express, Version 8.5.1.
According to the CAS website:[12]
Now you can search and display Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for approximately 12 million records in the CA/CAplus family of databases, including 75 percent of journal articles that have already entered CAplus in 2012. DOIs provide a permanent and unique identifier for retrieving full-text publications.
The availability of DOI information for specific records can be found in the FA field using DOI/FA or FTDOI/FA. Where available, DOI information is now automatically included in ALL/IALL and MAX/IMAX display formats at no additional charge.
April 2012
According to the CAS website:[13]
STN alerts (SDIs) can now be delivered by RSS feeds. New RSS alert delivery on STN:
- Allows you to easily distribute STN alert results throughout your organization to support critical research and business decisions.
- Supports your workflow by seamlessly integrating with most commercially available RSS readers and custom applications, such as portals.
To set up a new alert for RSS delivery, just enter RSS as the method of delivery during the STN SDI set-up process. Existing alerts can be changed to RSS delivery using the SDI EDIT command. Alerts being delivered by RSS can also be delivered to specific email addresses simultaneously by including these addresses in the Optional Email IDs section of the SDI set-up. At the completion of the SDI set-up process, you will receive the URL for the RSS feed, which can be accessed by any standard RSS reader to display the results.
According to the CAS website:[14]
CAS is enhancing its extensive patent authority coverage in CA/CAplus by adding the Eurasian Patent Organization (EAPO). EAPO (country code EA) is headquartered in Moscow and the 63rd authority covered by CAS.
Eurasian patent documents expand CAS' already substantial coverage of the world's major patent authorities. CAS actively continues to expand coverage, particularly from smaller patent authorities which would otherwise be largely inaccessible to many patent searchers.
Coverage of Eurasian kind code B1 is retroactive to February 27, 2007. The B1 kind code covers patents. Eurasian B1 patents are eligible to be covered as basics or added to existing patent families. Approximately 1,700 patents are expected per year, including approximately 420 basic patents.
March 2012
According to the CAS website:[15]
CAS is enhancing the MARPAT database with additional backfile coverage from 1987 beginning with English- and German-language patents in March. Markush content for Japanese- and additional German-language patents from 1987 will be added throughout 2012.
February 2012
An update on the new STN platform was recently posted on the CAS website:[16]
In October 2011, the STN partners announced that a completely new STN would be phased into the market beginning in 2012. This initiative was to start with an alpha release at the end of 2011, followed by continued customer consultation and product development.
We are pleased to confirm that we are on track with this plan.
An alpha release was provided to the STN Advisory Council members in December 2011, and has been used to date by nearly 100 patent search professionals. They have confirmed that the new platform provides important advances while retaining the value of STN and aligning with the workflow of patent experts.
An enhanced alpha version will be available by June. At that time, we will expand availability to additional customers who have requested early access to the new platform.
Release of a beta version of the new platform to all STN fixed-fee customers is on track for the fourth quarter of 2012.
January 2012
According to STN International:[17]
Previously, very large chemical structure images were not available for display. Instead of "STRUCTURE DIAGRAM TOO LARGE FOR DISPLAY - AVAILABLE VIA OFFLINE PRINT", these images will now display online and appear in transcripts.
This enhancement is available to customers using STN on the Web and STN Express, Version 8.5. Customers using STN Express, Version 8.4 or earlier will need to upgrade to take advantage of this enhancement.
According to the CAS website:[18]
View chemical substance images for more patent records with the addition of over 79,000 structure graphics (issue graphics) to the MARPAT and CA/CAplus databases on STN and SciFinder.The enhanced availability of these images increases customers access to information regarding the structure of chemical entities disclosed in Markush patents. Structure graphics are now available for more than 75 percent of MARPAT records.
December 2011
According to an email from CAS, the "STN fixed-fee plans can now cover all databases, including NAPRALERT." Users can contact their STN representative for more information on the Fixed-Fee Program.[19]
According to the CAS website:[20]
Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), a division of the American Chemical Society and the world's authority for chemical information, today announced a long term collaboration with InfoChem, GmbH (InfoChem), a leader in chemical structure and reaction technology as well as datamining in chemical science documents, headquartered in Munich, Germany.Under the new collaboration, research teams at CAS and InfoChem will work together to explore the technology frontiers in the field of cheminformatics. For example, the joint team is now researching and developing technology to identify chemical information in text and to semantically enrich chemical information documents. The partners will also continue to focus on chemical substance information and the ways to extract, derive, store, communicate and interpret that information.
According to STN International:[21]
STN on the Web has been enhanced with an updated BLAST plugin installer and is now fully compatible with Microsoft Windows 7. Please refer to the updated Operating System and Browser Support chart on the STN on the Web login page (https://stnweb.cas.org/) for enhanced compatibilities.
According to the STNewsline for December 2011:[22]
Rolled-up IPC Core Codes are being removed from IPC reclassifications (IPCR field) in patent databases on STN to deliver more consistent and streamlined IPC content.
In 2006, the European Patent Office (EPO) introduced Rolled-up Core Codes for each advanced level IPC code in patents. This practice simplified searching across countries by providing a code that spanned assigned IPC codes at both the Advanced level and the Core level. In late 2010, the EPO stopped rolling up Core Codes and removed Rolled-Up Core Codes from the IPC reclassifications supplied quarterly to database producers and vendors.
Rolled-up IPC Core Codes have now been removed from the IPCR fields of the following databases on STN:
- CA/CAplus family of databases
- EPFULL
- FRFULL
- GBFULL
- INPADOCDB / INPAFAMDB
- PATDPAFULL
- PCTFULL
- USPATFULL / USPAT2 / USPATOLD
Rolled-up Core Codes are in the process of being removed from the set of current IPCs in WPINDEX / WPIDS / WPIX. This process will be completed by end of 2011.
According to the STNewsline for December 2011:[22]
In mid-November, CAS enhanced its extensive patent authority coverage in CA/CAplus by adding the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia. Malaysia (country code MY) is the 62nd authority covered by CAS.
Malaysian patent documents expand CAS’ already substantial coverage of the world’s major patent authorities. CAS actively continues to expand coverage, particularly from smaller patent authorities which would otherwise be largely inaccessible to many patent searchers.
You can quickly access multiple sources with broad coverage of 62 patent authorities covered by CAS. Coverage of Malaysian kind code A is retroactive to January 15, 2010. This includes granted patents and utility models. Malaysian A patents are eligible to be covered as basics or added to existing patent families. Approximately 1,000 patents are expected per year (approximately 200 basic patents) from Malaysia.

Coverage in the CA/CAplus databases is expanded to include Japanese patent examiner citations. Intellectually translated examiner citations include links to other CAplus records for quick access to the exact information you need such as inventor names and patent assignees.
Database coverage includes Japanese B1 and B2 patents processed as basics and published September 21, 2011 or later. Patent examiner citations are available for about 95 percent of the Japanese B1 and B2 patents processed so far.

The STN partners, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) in the U.S. and FIZ Karlsruhe in Germany, are pleased to announce that a completely new STN will be phased into the market beginning in 2012. The new platform will bring improved efficiency and usability at the expert level. Powerful new elements will include:[...] An alpha release to the STN Advisory Council is planned for later this year, and a re-lease to global STN fixed fee customers will follow in 2012. The initial customer release will comprise the core databases of CAS and Thomson Reuters, a number of full-text patent files, and a suite of critical features and functions. Subsequent releas-es will be enhanced with additional databases and functionality. The current STN system, including STN Express and STN on the Web, will continue to be available and fully supported throughout the development of the new platform.
- Project-oriented workflow,
- Combined text and structure queries,
- Simultaneous query and results interaction,
- Real-time analysis of results, and
- Virtually no system limits.

According to STN International:[24]
Thesauri for ECLA (European Patent Classifications) and ICO (in computer-only) codes now provide STN users a higher degree of specificity when searching patents in the CA/CAplus family of databases on STN. Monthly updates to both thesauri allow STN users to access information about emerging areas of technology. Additional ECLA and ICO code changes in the CA/CAplus family of databases include matching formatting conventions for cross-database searching. The thesauri can be used with the EXPAND and SEARCH commands in EPC (including EPC aliases, ECLA and EPCLA) and ICO fields. The following relationship codes are available:
- ALL - All associated terms
- AUTO - Automatic relationship (BT, SELF, CODE, DEF)
- BT - Broader terms (BT, SELF, DEF)
- CODE - Classification code (SELF, CODE)
- DEF - Definition (SELF, DEF)
- HIE - Hierarchy terms (all broader and narrower terms)
- (BT, SELF, DEF, NT) KT Keyword terms (SELF, KT)
- MAX - All associated terms
- NEXT - Next classification within the same class (SELF, NEXT)
- NEXT(n) - Next n classifications within the same class
- NT - Narrower terms (SELF, NT, DEF)
- PREV - Previous code within the same class (PREV, SELF, DEF)
- PREV(n) - Previous n classifications within the same class
- TI - Complete title including broader terms (BT, SELF, DEF)

According to STN International, STN Express Version 8.5 includes "updated table and report post-processing functionality to allow parsing of the new assembled FQHIT, QHIT, FQHITEXG and QHITEXG display formats in MARPAT."[27]
June 2011
According to a post on the PIUG wiki, new MARPAT features include:[28]
- FQHITEXG and QHITEXG, two new MARPAT display formats that provide definitions for all unmatched G-groups shown in the answer
- PNK and PNK.B fields, which have been added to MARPAT to enhance cross-file transfer of results
- Increased search precision in closed substructure searches that employ connectivity settings
The QHIT and FQHIT display formats have been enhanced to provide more recognizable results by assembling the query-focused fragments. The assembled answers increase understanding for users, while making it easier to share MARPAT information with other decision-makers.
According to the CAS website, there are "improved structure drawing and searching capabilities available with the updated Structure Plug-in (version 8.5)."[30]
According to the June 2011 STNews, a future development for MARPAT will include "new Markush assembled displays in the CAS MARPAT database to significantly reduce review and analysis time."[31]
May 2011
According to the June 2011 STNews, the CAS Registry registered its 60 millionth substance:[31]
On May 20, 2011, CAS Registry Number® 1298016-92-8 became the 60 millionth substance. The substance shows antiviral activity against Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2).
According to the CAS website, a new STN platform is being developed:[32]
Plans to develop a new STN platform have been announced by STN partners, CAS and FIZ Karlsruhe. The new platform will provide a more modern interface and product architecture, while maintaining the critical search power and high quality content for which STN has become known. Some advantages will beThe new platform will run in parallel with current STN services for a few years to provide a comfortable transition for current users.

According to the CAS website, CA/CAplus now includes "Swedish patent applications (kind code A1) from April 13, 2010 to present."[33] Swedish kind codes "are now eligible to be added to patent families:"[33]
- A0 (Patent application made available to the public)
- A2 (Corrected patent application)
- C3 (Corrected granted patent)
- T3 (Translation of EP patent)
November/December 2010
According to the CAS website, there has been an "increase in search limits in the CAS databases."[34] "The current accession number crossover limit from MARPAT to and from the CA/CAplus databases is doubling from 50,000 to 100,000."[34]
September 2010
According to the CAS website:[35]
- Changes in CA/CAplus kind codes and formats for Chinese patents: "Chinese utility models with a publication date of October 6, 2010 or later will now use kind code U in the CA/CAplus family of databases. The kind codes for Chinese utility patents with publication dates of April 7, 2010 through October 5, 2010 will be updated from Y to U."[35]
- Changes in CA/CAplus kind codes and formats for Korean patents:
"A new seven-digit format has been adopted to ensure conformity among the CA/CAplus family and other important STN databases.The new format contains a zero (0) inserted immediately following the 7, which is always the first of the seven characters in the serial number (see example below). This change applies to 90,000 Korean application numbers and to approximately 3,000 priority application numbers in patents from 1999 to the present."[35]
- Changes in CA/CAplus kind codes and formats for Taiwanese patents: "The new formats will be applied to new Taiwanese applications and CA/CAplus backfile records, and differ from previous formats by the deletion of the first two characters (that corresponded to the Taiwanese year) immediately following the dash."[35]
Summer 2010
According to the newsletter "How to Use the New Features: SciFinder," users can now conduct Markush searches on the SciFinder platform:[36]
This feature allows users to retrieve patent documents containing generic Markush structures relevant to the query structure. Search results are presented as a reference answer set. Markush searches are run against the MARPAT database with a predefined set of search parameters that differ in some cases from SciFinder defaults (for example, rings are isolated in Markush searches). Searches are intended to provide focused answers that can be helpful in a preliminary assessment of the patent landscape.
July 2010
In July 2010, CAS announced that it will begin indexing Costa Rican (CR) patent documents. In addition, this update will expand the kinds of Argentinian (AR) patent documents that are treated with CAS indexing.
Costa Rican coverage will include published applications and utility models.
Coverage of Argentinian documents will include the following kind codes:
- A1 (patent applications)
- A2 (divisional patent application)
- A3 (additional patent application)
- A4 (independent utility model application)
- A6 (additional utility model application)

December 2009/January 2010
CAS added a 60th patenting authority, the Philippines (PH) to the list of those authorities which receive extensive chemical indexing. In an in-depth discussion on the PIUG wiki, a CAS representative confirmed that where Markush structures exist in documents from the Philippines, those records will be added to the MARPAT database.[37]

November 2008
In this update, MARPAT was enhanced to allow the FSORT command, which allows search hits to be grouped by patent family. For more information on this command, the official news item from CAS is available at http://www.cas.org/support/stngen/stnews/dbnews/november08.html.
January 2008
CAS added a 50th patenting authority, WIPO, to the list of patenting authorities being treated with generic structure indexing for MARPAT searching. In April 2008, the computational power of MARPAT was enhanced to reduce the number of searches that return at least one unprocessed result by more than 60%. In addition, the iteration and answer limits were increased from 100,000 to 200,000 for both online and batch searches.[38]
