Summary

The MMS system itself searches two similar but independent data files which have been indexed for topological chemical structure searching. These two files are known as Pharm and the Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) files. Neither file contains full text records; instead, they contain title, abstract and family publication data which have been indexed from a chemistry perspective for generic structure searching. By utilizing the cross-file searching capabilities of the parent system, Questel-Orbit, results from an MMS structure search can be crossed over to Pharm or DWPI, and then to full text patent databases.

The DWPI is a worldwide patent bibliographic and family file with records from over 40 patenting authorities. Not all DWPI authorities are given MMS indexing, however: only families with at least one member from a “major” Derwent country or publication are treated with MMS indexing. In 2006, the authorities (and defensive publications) treated with MMS indexing were:

  • Austria (AT)
  • New Zealand (NZ)
  • Australia (AU)
  • Patent Cooperation Treaty (WO)
  • Belgium (BE)
  • Philippines (PH)
  • Brazil (BR)
  • Portugal (PT)
  • Canada (CA)
  • Republic of Korea (KR)
  • China (CN)
  • Research Disclosures (to 2001)
  • European Patent Office (EP)
  • Romania (RO)
  • France (FR)
  • Russian Federation (RU)
  • German Democratic Repbulic (DD)
  • Singapore (SG)
  • Germany (DE)
  • South Africa (ZA)
  • Hungary (HU)
  • Soviet Union (SU)
  • International Technical Disclosures (to 1993)
  • Spain (ES)
  • Ireland (IE)
  • Sweden (SE)
  • Israel (IL)
  • Switzerland (CH)
  • Japan (JP)
  • Taiwan (TW)
  • Mexico (MX)
  • United Kingdom (GB)
  • Netherlands (NL)
  • United States (US)

Other Coverage

Citations: On their own, neither Pharm nor DWPI records contain citation data; however, by crossing results into other data files within Questel’s collection, some citation data can be obtained for search hits.

Legal Status: On their own, neither Pharm nor DWPI records contain legal status data; however, by crossing results into other data files within Questel’s collection, some legal status data may be obtained for search hits.

Family Data: Each record in DWPI and PHARM represents one patent family. See the Derwent World Patents Index supplementary article for more information on how DWPI families are formed.

Document Images: Both the Pharm and DWPI files contain a representative patent image from one family member per family record. In Pharm, drawings are available from 1989 for European Patent Office (EP), Patent Cooperation Treaty (WO/PCT) and France (FR) documents, and from 1992 for United States (US), United Kingdom (GB) and Germany (DE) documents.
