China

An initial collection of partial-text original language Chinese documents was added to PatBase in early 2008. Coverage for both the patent application and utility model collections begins on September 10, 1985. In general, the most recently published documents in this collection seem to lag about three months behind the current date. The documents do not contain the complete full text of the original language data: title, abstract, and first claims are included, while description sections are not included.

In October 2008, this collection became searchable in PatBase (see the secton on the Non-Latin Text Search Form for more information). Because the Chinese language is a “non-Latin” language, the text is accessed in PatBase via a slightly different route than text sections in Latin languages (see Viewing Non-Latin Text Records for more information). Finally, the Chinese full text sections can be translated into English using a machine translation feature within PatBase (See Machine Translations for Non-Latin Text for more information).

In accordance with general PatBase practices, machine translated English abstracts are also included for those records without English-language family members. To learn more, see the Machine Translated Abstracts section of this article.

editors note iconEditor's Note:

PatBase is one of the first commercial search providers to begin making original text available for documents published in non-Latin languages. By extending its full text collection to Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Russian-language documents, PatBase is playing a valuable role in the patent search market. This is true especially because Asian countries are accounting for an ever-larger percentage of patent filings and are becoming increasingly more important sources of prior art.
