Editing Queries
There are two types of queries to be edited in PatBase: queries from the active search history, and saved queries.
As discussed in Managing Search Histories, above, active queries can be edited and corrected, and then re-run, writing over the old history. In addition to this method, mistakes in a query can be easily corrected by clicking the query line number, so that the text of the search string appears in the command line. The search can then be corrected and re-run, creating a new string. This method is quicker and can be useful if there is no need to generate a totally clean copy of the final search history,
The second type of query to be edited is a saved search string. Technically, individual queries cannot be altered. However, users do have an opportunity to edit queries within a search history script by re-running the entire script. Before a saved history is re-run, the load script screen will appear, showing the history script inside an editable text box (see the figure below). At this time, they may be able to delete unwanted strings, or add new queries to the search strategy. Editing a script will not save over the original version; the new, edited script that appears on the search history page will have to be re-saved.
As of 2010, this feature can also be used with PatBase's simple script editor. The screenshot below shows this option, which breaks down the script into individual strings so that it is easier to view.
Editor's Note:Some users have complained that it is troublesome to revise and edit saved search queries while keeping the complete history intact, because the entire set of strings must be re-run after edits are made (a time-consuming process, especially if the history is long). This complaint is justified, although users should keep in mind that it if is only necessary to make changes to a few strings, the "good" strings can be deleted from the editing screen before the script is re-run, and only the "bad" strings will have to be changed and re-calculated. The newly changed queries can then be saved as a separate search history, but the user will need to remember that both search histories relate to the same project (perhaps by assigning similar names to each script). Although it probably depends on local factors like the user's processor and connection speed, some find that PatBase has a habit of "hanging" or crashing while re-running long search histories.
