German Text Search

The purpose of the German Text search is to allow users to apply left truncation to searches conducted in the German language. Left hand truncation is not supported in any other PatBase search interface. This form is the only one that can accept left-truncated terms; however, German text may be entered into any other form in PatBase if no left truncation is needed.

The German Text Search form.

Once executed, the system will add the German search to the search history, preceded by the term "[DE]." Users may then combine the German string search step with any other search in the search history.

The help documentation provided at the bottom of the search page lays out the limitations placed on left-truncation searching with this form. These include:

  • All Boolean operators and proximity operators available in PatBase may be used
  • No more than six unlimited truncation operators (asterisks) may be used in any single search query
  • Terms not starting with a truncation operator (asterisk) must have at least 6 characters before the first asterisk.
  • Terms starting with left truncation (an asterisk) must have at least 6 characters before a second asterisk may be used.
