December 2012
According to the SureChem blog:[1]
Today we announced there are now more than 8 million SureChem structures available in PubChem, covering US, EP and WO patents, and Japan patent abstracts, from 1976 to present. More than 4 million of these are unique to SureChem as a source, meaning a big jump in the amount of publicly available patent chemistry.
See the full post here.
Structures from image annotations for US, EP, WO full text and JP abstracts are now available from Jan 1, 2009 to date.[2]
November 2012
Structures from image annotations for US, EP, WO full text and JP abstracts are now available from Jan 1, 2010 to date.[3]
According to the SureChemOpen homepage, structures from image annotations for US, EP, WO full text and JP abstracts are now available from Jan 1, 2011 to date.[4]
The SureChem website now hosts a Support section, which offers documentation on:
- Chemical searching
- Searching SureChem
- SureChemOpen
- Coverage and statistics
- General help
According to the SureChem blog, SureChem deposited 8.2 million unique structures into PubChem in mid-October, and "the data is not yet publicly available, as we are still putting in place some infrastructure needed to link from PubChem back to SureChem."[5] SureChem announces in this post that they "are planning to make the PubChem data publicly available in the coming weeks."[5]
October 2012
According to the IFI CLAIMS Patent Services Newsletter, "SureChem uses Claims Direct as its source for basic patent information and full text."[6] The Support section of the SureChem website also mentions that "the SureChem family of products is built upon the Claims® Global Patent Database, a comprehensive international patent collection provided by IFI Claims®."[7]
September 2012
A post on the SureChem blog describes a series of SureChemDirect optimizations:[8]
This series of optimisations brings major performance increases for searches in which one wants to retrieve documents for a set of chemical structure hits (known as documents-for-structures in SureChem parlance). It's a computationally intensive process, especially with the numbers of structures and documents that SureChemDirect can access in batch mode. But now searches that took hours are down to minutes or seconds.
August 2012
SureChem has announced that it is planning to deposit all SureChem chemical structure data into PubChem within the next year:[9]
The deposition will include all structures for US, EP and WO patents back to 1976 (or 1978 in the case of EP and WO) up to the current date. We will update PubChem as we index the structures, so the collection will be comprehensive and current. (We will probably filter out some common chemistry and other chemical 'noise' such as the chemical fragments that pop up in nearly all patents.)All the structures will be identified in PubChem as coming from SureChem patents, and users can simply navigate from the structures to their free SureChemOpen account, where they can then view the patents containing the chemistry in which they are interested.
SureChemDirect is SureChem's new enterprise product that officially launched August 17, 2012. See this full announcement on the SureChem blog.[10]
The SureChemOpen homepage states that the chemistry annotation coverage for the website for US, EP, and WO full text and JP abstracts is as follows:[11]
- Structures from text annotations - from Jan 1, 1976 to date
- Structures from image annotations - from Jan 1, 2012 to date
According to an e-mail from the SureChem Team:[12]
- SureChemOpen gives users access to almost 12 million unique chemical structures. Chemistry structures have been extracted from patent text back to 1976 and from images for 2012.
- The creators of SureChemOpen have "improved the search and document viewing experience, boosted performance and made numerous bug fixes."
- "Mid-August sees the launch of our enterprise product, SureChemDirect, offering API access to our complete text and chemistry database."
- "This will be followed in Q4 by SureChemPro."

September 2011
According to the SureChem website:[17]
SureChem now offers support for Accelrys Draw as an alternative structure drawing tool. Users with Accelrys Draw installed and running Internet Explorer will see an option to select the new tool on the main search page or alternatively in the preferences section.
August 2011
According to the SureChem website:[17]
Searching is now significantly faster, particularly when searching for documents associated with structures. The search portal has also been enhanced, promoting keyword, assignee, and date filtering for structure searches. These filters can be used to focus and speed up your searching, meaning you get more relevant results, faster.
June 2011
According to the SureChem website:[17]
SureChem subscribers now have access to free downloads of PDFs of US, EP and WO patent records. Formerly SureChem had to charge for these as we sourced them from a supplier that charged us on a per-document basis. We have since changed suppliers, giving us a dedicated feed that allows us to simply include the PDFs with the subscription price, which remains unchanged.
May 2011
According to the SureChem website:[17]
We have deployed a new display for viewing results from chemical structure searches, based on feedback from our users. Instead of a list view with associated patents, structures are now displayed in a matrix that enables quick review and comparison of results. Clicking on a structure of interest will then show related patents.
March 2011
According to the SureChem website:[17]
Users will notice a new look for the Portal. The design features a new SureChem logo and colour scheme, echoing the style of Digital Science. Users can also more easily access information about SureChem products, pricing and databases.
April 2010
The free version of Surechem was taken offline as of April 2010. The subscription service remains available for purchase.
December 2009
Surechem, Inc. was acquired by Macmillan Publishers Ltd.
August 2009
SureChem Pro Version 3 was announced in August 2009. According to SureChem[18], the additions and enhancements include:
- Direct filtering for substructure searches by keyword, assignee, inventor, and by patent claims or description, that immediately show the resulting change in the number of structure hits returned. Though stated somewhat unclearly, this means only that the reduction in hits caused by filtering will be immediately reflected.
- The addition of Japan patent abstracts
- Addition to structure export file of the patent field in which each structure is located
- Support for InChI queries (Use the “Basic Text” search tab)
- Faster searches and reduced time for loading the Marvin drawing applet.
An update to the SureChem database was also announced[19] and includes:
- Addition of Japan patent abstracts
- Addition of InChI codes and keys to database
- Error correction modules for better entity recognition of name-to-structure conversion, resulting in a 10% increase in structures converted
- Unique structures: 10.9 million (vs 8.5 million in previous database version)
- Patent records were increased to 17.9 million
- MEDLINE records were increased to 19.9 million
Finally, SureChem also announced[20] that SureChem's database has been linked to the ChemSpider database. This agreement greatly expands the information available to SureChem's users.
March 2009
Updates to SureChem Pro at this time included:
- New search results sorting methods
- Options to filter out chemical fragments and radicals (default setting)
- Keyword and patent field filtering of structure searches across multiple patent datasets
- SD and CSV file extension chemical structure exporting
- Additional export fields
- For-pay searchable PDF downloads
- Faster interface and search algorithms
For full information on this update, please visit the official press release on SureChem's website.
July 2008
SureChem database 2.5 was released on July 25, 2008 and included “cleaned-up structure data for USPTO chemical images”.[21] From its inception, it has gone through many revisions and major updates indicating the company's aggressive posture in the market. SureChem Inc. is looking to expand the analysis features of SureChem Pro in one major future update. For more information on SureChem Inc., see the Company Strength section.
