Hi Kerri –

I’d recommend reading Kristin Whitman’s post on the Intellogist Blog, “How I found my way in patent information.” She mentions some excellent product literature to read and also talks about the Patent Information Users Group (PIUG), an association of patent information professionals that could provide you with excellent insight into the profession and networking opportunities.

For educational opportunities, I’d also recommend looking at some of the courses available through Patent Resources Group, which offers both patent bar review courses and a wide range of continuing education courses for patent professionals. The Spring 2012 Advanced Courses program includes a course called the Art and Science of Patent Searching, which will help you learn the process of conducting efficient and thorough prior art searches.
Thanks!
Joelle

  Thank you

Thank you Joelle for your tips.

Also, what are your thoughts on the following questions:

- are there more opportunities for this type of work on the east or west coast?
- if I need a visa, would this be a detractant for employees?
- are there many opportunities in the private industry?
- are there particular job sites I should monitor?

Thank you

Hi Kerri-

-In regards to East Coast vs. West Coast, the East Coast probably has more job opportunities, since its generally more populated (especially Washington DC, NYC, and Boston).

-Visa: I'm not sure, but it probably depends on the company whether it matters.

-To get an idea of the current available job opportunities, I'd recommend monitoring PIUG and LinkedIn. This blog post has a list of IP LinkedIn groups you can join.

Thanks!

Joelle

  Patent Searcher in Brazil

Hi everyone,

My name is Calebe. I've been working with patent searching for 2 years while I was studying Mechanical Engineering. I'll be graduated in feb/2013 and I'd like to know if anyone here has some information about companies or office that may be hiring engineers in this period (in Brazil, mainly).

Thank you.

P.S.: this forum is very useful. Congratulations you all.
