Taiwan's national patent office offers a free English-language search of Taiwan published applications, granted patents, designs, and utility models.
This interface allows an English-language keyword search, and provides both representative patent drawings (shown alongside results) and links to the full document images in PDF format.
Search options include:
- Quick Search (basic keyword search)
- Boolean Search (select fields from adjacent drop-down menus)
- Advanced Search (command line interface)
- Field Search (fielded search form)
In 2009, this database was enhanced to include forward and backward citations. In addition, the search interface was extended to support new datafields, and the results display was extended. [1]
File Wrapper Search
Users can now also access TIPO online file histories through an English-language interface. From the TIPO English-language homepage, users select the "File Wrapper Search" option. Users can then enter the application or publication number and search for the related file wrapper. The data will be displayed in two colors: red is for Office actions, and blue for documents submitted by an applicant. Most of the official communications (confirmation letters, corrections/amendments, re-examination, search reports) are available in Chinese language only.
Coverage of data:
- Patent applications published after 2003.
- Re-examination histories are available from December 2011.
- Post-grant information will be recorded, but will not be published.
User Experiences
Sometimes users are frustrated by the English-language interface for this database when they are attempting to download Taiwan (TW) patent documents. Often, this can be successfully done from the Chinese-language interface even when the document does not appear to be available from the English-language interface. The EPO offers a tutorial on the TWPAT advanced number search in Chinese from its East-meets-West series on patent information.
